    Former economy and finance minister George Alogoskoufis on Monday announced his retirement from politics and a return to a career as a university professor.

    Alogoskoufis, who failed to garner enough votes in Sunday's election to be elected to Parliament from Athens' first election district on New Democracy's ballot, thanked his constituents and emphasised that Sunday's election outcome is a cause for concern for the party.
