passes away
Metropolitan Nikiforos of Didymoteicho, Orestiada and Soufli passed
away on Sunday morning at the age of 78.
Nikiforos, born Athanassios Archaggelidis, died in a private clinic in
Alexandroupolis, where he was hospitalised for a terminal illness he
had been battling for several years.
Born in Ferres, in Evros prefecture in 1931 and a graduate of the Halki
Seminary School and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Nikiforos
was ordained a deacon in 1956 and a senior priest in 1961.
He was elected and ordained a Metropolitan (Bishop) in 1988.
The late Metropolitan's body will lay in state at the Panaghia
Eleftherotria church in Didymoteicho, while his funeral will be held on
Tuesday.
