  • [01] August brings the hatching of Caretta-caretta turtles

A newborn caretta-caretta sea turtle makes its way towards the water in the Gulf of Kyparissia in mid August 2009. The caretta-caretta turtle is an emblematic endangered species protected by international, European and national laws. Some 50,000 turtles are born on the pristine beach every year, of which only one in 1,000 reaches adulthood. The turtles sprawn in the same beach they were born. Their nesting period is between June and August. The female digs in the sand and puts the eggs inside. The brood contains 120 eggs and only a 60 percent completes the 50-day hatching period. The newborn turtles follow the horizon and moonlight to find their way to the sea. An adult caretta-caretta can reach up to 140 kg. ANA-MPA / ORESTIS PANAGIOTOU
