[01] Gunmen kill officer guarding terrorism trial witness
Three gunmen shot and killed a police officer in Athens at dawn
Wednesday as he was guarding the wife of a defendant in the ELA
(Revolutionary Popular Struggle urban guerrilla group). The woman had
been a material witness in the ELA trial and was in the Witness
Protection Program.
The gunmen riddled the police officer with bullets from an automatic
weapon, possibly an Uzi.
Members of the police counter-terrorism squad were investigating the
crime scene.
