[01] Papandreou attends service in Distomo
Main opposition PASOK party leader George Papandreou attended a
memorial service at the Saint Nikolaos Cathedral on Wednesday in memory
of the people killed at Distomo, in Viotia, by the German occupation
forces during World War Two.
Speaking after the service, Papandreou said that "here, from martyred
Distomo, we honour all the dead, of all the martyred places and cities
of Greece. We honour the struggles of all who fought against Nazism,
for Democracy and the freedom of our homeland."
Papandreou added that "we do not forget, because they taught us. They
taught us and are teaching us that if we do not wish to see again
similar barbarism and violence, inhumanity, racism and wars, it is
neccesary for us to struggle on a daily basis for Europe of Democracy,
of the strength of Justice, and not of the right of the powerful, of
humanity, of peace."
