[01] ASE opening: Sharp rise

Individual sector indices were moving upward across the board, with the biggest gains in Insurance, up 5.16 percent; Chemicals, up 4.81 percent; Raw Materials, up 4.00 percent; Telecoms, up 3.93 percent; Health, up 3.86 percent; and Banks, up 3.77 percent.

The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 2.66 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was up 2.78 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 3.02 percent.

Of the stocks moved, 121 were up, 4 were down, and 11 were unchanged.

The changes in successive insurance, the fiscal deficit, the new tax collecting measures and the SIEMENS case dominated the headlines on Wednesday in Athens' newspapers.
