[01] Mass participation in Earth HourGovernment and municipal buildings, archaeological sites and an impressive number of households throughout Greece switched off their lights during Earth Hour on Saturday.An immense proportion of the people throughout Greece joiined the rest of the world in the WWF-sponsored Earth Hour global event aiming at raising public awareness on environmental issues and climate change, switching of lights for an hour between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. In Athens, the city center and surrounding neighborhoods, as well as the suburbs, plunged into darkness as the lights were turned off along roads and squares, historic and cultural monuments such as the Parthenon, the Temple of Poseidon at Sounio, the Ancient Agora, as well as the Parliament building, military units and civil services, sports fields, municpal byildings, Lycabettus Hill, parts of the Athens International Airport, and billboards and outside lighting at the Athens Metro. The Athens Municipality also staged a music concert, featuring the renowned Greek tenor and singer Marios Fragoulis, at Pnyka Hill, while various music events, without lights, electrical equipment and microphones, were staged in various other parts of the city. A similar turnout took place in Thessaloniki and other cities and towns throughout the country. The Public Power Corporation also joined in the effort, switching off exterior lighting and lights inside its various building facilities.
