  • [01] PM Karamanlis confers with agriculture minister

Prime minister Costas Karamanlis met on Friday with agricultural development and food safety minister Sotiris Hatzigakis, who briefed the premier on progress in the developmental program that, he explained, aimed to boost the Greek countryside.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Hatzigaklis noted that the "Alexandros Baltatzis" developmental program for 2007-2013 was being updated and "rekindled" for that purpose,

The minister also said that by summer the subsidies, reinforcements and indemnities in relief to the Greek farmers would be advanced, adding that these would fortify more than half a million Greek farmers.

Hatzigakis said he further briefed Karamanlis on the national dialogue which was urgently bringing the agricultural problem back to the forefront.

The problem, he explained, was both European and international, adding that the national agricultural policy council would be restructured through the national dialogue aimed at participational democracy and the participation of the farmers thenselves on the issues that concern them.
