Individual sector indices were moving mostly upward, with the biggest gains in Oil & Gas, up 1.84 percent; Mass Media, up 1.38 percent; and Construction, up 1.21 percent.

The biggest losses were in Insurance, down 0.89 percent; Travel & Recreation, down 0.69 percent; and Telecoms, down 0.60 percent.

The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 0.26 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was down 0.12 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 0.33 percent.

Of the stocks moved, 44 were up, 34 were down, and 32 were unchanged.

The prospect of the European Commission instituting excessive deficit procedures on Greece, the FinMin's new measures on the crisis and the failed car-bomb outside a Citibank office building in the northern Athens suburb of Kifissia on Wednesday dominated the headlines on Thursday in Athens' newspapers.
