  • [01] Election of new Archbishop gets underway

The process for the election of a new Archbishop of Athens and All Greece opened on Thursday morning, with the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece convening at the Athens Metroplitan Cathedral.

The four hierarchs who have declared candidacy are Metropolitans Ieronymos of Thebes, Efstathios of Sparta, Anthimos of Thessaloniki, and Ignatios of Dimitriada.

The election process, following the death last week of Archbishop Christodoulos, commenced after an early morning Liturgy and prayer.

The election will take place in a single undisrupted session of the Holy Synod at Athens' Metropolitan Cathedral, attended by the Education and Religious Affairs minister Evripides Stylianidis. A quorum is required, which is designated by the Church's charter and Law 590/77 at two-thirds of the active Metropolitans, and a maximum of three rounds of voting may be held.

At 9:00 a.m. the gates of the Cathedral closed in order for the process to commence, with a count to ascertain whether a quorum is present.

The Hierarchs will then cast their votes in a ballot box, in the presence of a three-member monitoring committee which, together with the minister, will seal the ballot box at the end of the voting.

The candidate receiving the absolute majority (50 percent +1) of the votes is elected Archbishop.

In the event that an absolute majority is not amassed by one of the candidates, a second round will be held again requiring an absolute majority.

If again no candidate amasses the required absolute majority, a third round will be held, this time requiring only a simple majority of the votes.

In the case of a tie in the third round, the Archbishop is chosen in a draw.

The process is expected to be concluded by 5:00 in the afternoon.

[02] PM in Romania, energy accord to be signed

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, on an official visit to Romania, will meet with his Romanian counterpart Calin Popescu-Tariceanu on Thursday for bilateral talks, after which the premiers will be joined by delegations from both sides for an expanded meeting.

Karamanlis, who arrived in Bucharest on Wednesday afternoon from Ljubljana after an official visit to Slovenia, will be received earlier by Patriarch Daniel of Romania.

Alternate government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros said on Wednesday that a cooperation agreement in the energy sector between Greece and Romania will be signed in Bucharest, with both premiers expected to make statements to the press.

A reception in Karamanlis' honour will be also held.

Karamanlis will further be received by Romanian President Traian Basescu.

    [03] Synaspismos Congress begins

The 5th Congress of the Coalition of the Left, Movements and Ecology (Synaspismos) party begins on Thursday afternoon at the Tae Kwon Do complex in the coastal suburb of Faliro, near Piraeus.

The Congress will conclude on Sunday with the election of a new party leader.

The two candidates for the party leadership are 60-year-old veteran Left politician and MP Fotis Kouvelis, and 34-year-old Political Secretariat member responsible for education and youth affairs Alexis Tsipras, a former secretary of the party's youth organisation.
