[01] Strong quake rattles southern Greece
A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale was recorded at
7:14 (05:14 GMT) Sunday near the southern town of Leonidio, on the
eastern coast of the Peloponnese in Arcadia prefecture, as the tremor
shook the greater Athens area some 150 kilometers to the northeast.
The early morning quake, which rattled residents across Greece on a
Epiphany Holiday morning, was felt as far away as the island of Crete
and the northwest city of Ioannina
According to municipal authorities in coastal Leonidio, no serious
damages were reported.
The director of the Athens Geodynamic Institute, George Stavrakakis,
referred to a strong earthquake located some 70 kilometers in depth
from the earth's surface, a fact that prevented widespread damage.
"If the quake had been on the surface, with a depth of 15 to 20
kilometers, then an aftershock would have followed of 6 on the Richter
scale, and there would have been consequences," he said, echoing an
assessment by other Greek seismologists, namely, that aftershocks are
not forecast.
