  • [01] PM to meet with Transport Minister

    Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis will meet on Thursday with Transport and Communications Minister Costis Hatzidakis at the Maximos mansion (government headquarters). On Friday morning, a meeting of the ruling New Democracy (ND) party Central Committee will convene at 10:30 at a downtown Athens hotel. The meeting will open with an address by the Prime Minister, after which Central Committee's members will outline their positions. The Central Committee will also program party's future actions.

    [02] Tiziano exhibition in Athens

    President Karolos Papoulias and his Italian counterpart Giorgio Napolitano jointly inaugurated the exhibition "From Tiziano to Pietro da Cortona" at the Museum of Cycladic Art on Wednesday afternoon and were then given a guided tour of the exhibition.

    Culture Minister Mihalis Liapis said in his address that "few are aware that the Tiziano exhibition was the dream of a great Greek woman, a visionary: Dolly Goulandris, which unfortunately she did not have time to see implemented."

    The Thursday edition of Athens' dailies at a glance

    The meeting of the ruling New Democracy (ND) party's Central Committee on Friday, the new salaries and raises in the public sector and the Armed Forces, and the ongoing strike by Customs employees and the resulting problems in the fuel market were the main front-page items in Thursday's dailies.

    ADESMEFTOS TYPOS: "The new salaries in the public sector, as of October 1", when the second part of the salary raises in the public sector, as provided in the 2008 incomes policy, enters into effect.

    APOGEVMATINI: "The new salaries in the public sector - The 2 percent second installment of the salary raise as of October 1".

    AVGHI: "The 'life-raft' of a government reshuffle is full of holes - Pressure for action by Karamanlis".
