[01] Papandreu: PASOK regaining its identity

Addressing a meeting of the party's Political Council on Monday night, Papandreou stressed that "it is not a time to celebrate, we have much work ahead of us", referring to recent opinion polls indicating a PASOK lead over ruling New Democracy, adding that his address at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) had been positively met, which means that "the people are now listening to what PASOK has to say, which in turn increases the party's responsibilties".

Papandreou praised the Political Council's contribution to PASOK's successful presence at the TIF, while he also set out the party's priorities, stressing that the target was to "bring back politics to PASOK".

He also said that, in that direction, he considered it important that the Panhellenic Socialist Movement "clarified, early on, who we are, with whom we are, who are on the other side, and what our fundamental priorities are".

"PASOK is regaining its identity, albeit gradually, that of a Movement of the people, and not of governmentism," Papandreou concluded.

The minister added that the nucleus of government policy is pursuing growth in a way that will decrease social inequalities gradually and in this direction the government will aim at preserving the stability of all that it has acchieved to date and speeding up the reformist programme that is being implemented at all levels.

OKE president Christos Polyzogopoulos said that "it appears that what is being sought for the Greek economy in the new National Reformist Programme are the terms that will allow the effective functioning of the administrative apparatus, will turn possibility into production reality and will confront the structural problems of the Greek economy."

[03] Baby bear found dead

Local residents alerted the "Arcturos" (Non state organisation for the protection of wildlife and endangered species in Greece) of the death, and an autopsy was soon conducted by biologists.

The male cub, weighing 29 kilos, died from a blow to the head.

The incident marks the 13th traffic accident and eleventh fatality involving a bear in western Macedonia over the last four years.

"Arcturos" has sent a proposal to the Ministry of Environment suggesting measures to avoid killing the animal and to safeguard wildlife corridors between mountain ranges.
