  • [01] PASOK accuses government for inflation

The main opposition PASOK party on Thursday accused the government of being "incapable of achieving the targets of the budget".

"Inflation being at 4.9 percent, proves that the government is incapable of achieving the targets of the budget," party spokeswoman Maria Karaklioumi told reports at her briefing.

"The budget served as a pretext for holding the September 2007 early elections," she said, adding that the budget "yet for another year fells short of its targets."

Earlier in the day, PASOK's economy rapporteur Louka Katseli, while commenting on the July inflation rate, accused the government that "instead of adopting measures in immediate support to the households' purchasing power and strengthening the market, the only thing it does is to declare that it will continue in the same path, thus accentuating the deep economic crisis which itself has provoked."

    [02] Wildfires under control

A wildfire that broke out on Thursday afternoon in Kallithea, near Sparta in southern Greece, is under partial control after burning a large forest region on Mt Parnonas. Three fire engines and firemen on foot are combating the blaze. Another wildfire in the region of Pagouraki, Messinia Prefecture, also in southern Greece, is under control and fire-fighting forces remain in the area for precautionary reasons.

    [03] "Perseids" meteor shower

Stargazers will meet on August 9 in Aspropili, in Ano Vrontou, northern Greece, at an altitude of 1,050 meters to observe the spectacular celestial phenomenon called the Perseids Shower. Many Greek and foreign astrophysicists and astronomers will observe the phenomenon that will reach its peak in the night of August 12. This year's observation conditions are expected to be very favorable due to the very good weather and the absence of moonlight. The Perseids are a meteor shower associated with the comet Swift-Tuttle and are named after the constellation of Perseus because the point they appear to come from, called the radiant, lies there. Meteor showers occur when the Earth moves through a meteor stream. In this case, the stream is called the Perseid cloud stretching along the orbit of Comet Swift-Tuttle consisting of particles ejected by the comet as it passed by the Sun. The Perseids shower is visible from mid-July each year, with the greatest activity between August 8 and 14, peaking around August 12 with a rate of meteors reaching 60 or more per hour. They can be seen all across the sky, but because of the path of Swift-Tuttle's orbit, they are mostly visible in the northern hemisphere. To experience the shower in its full, stargazers should observe the phenomenon in a clear moonless night, from a point far outside any large cities, where stars are not dimmed by light pollution.
