  • [01] PM briefed by Development Minister

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis met on Thursday with Development Minister Christos Folias, who briefed the premier on his recent visit to Moscow, during which he had talks with Russia's new energy minister Sergey Shmatko and the industry and trade minister Viktor Khristenko on progress in the major joint projects being constructed by the two countries, namely the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline and the South Stream natural gas pipeline.

Folias told reporters afterwards that a review was made on progress to date, and on the agreement between the two sides on the necessity of continuing work on the projects at a fast pace.

He said that both sides want the works to be accelerated, adding that "time is an important factor for all investments".

    [02] FM on AKP ruling

Foreign minister Dora Bakoyannis, commenting on the Turkish Constitutional Court's rejection of a petition for banning Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development (AKP) party, said in a statement on Thursday that the ruling "puts an end, in essence, to a period of uncertanty and instability in Turkey's political life".

"The government of Mr. Erdogan can now move ahead with the adoption and implementation of reforms and adjustments required to mark progress on its accession course to the European Union," Bakoyannis added.

    [03] Tourists swarming to Meteora

Tourists from eastern European countries, mostly Russians and Romanians, have been swarming this summer to the monastic community located on the nature-made rock towers of Meteora, central Greece, whereas in the past the region was a popular destination for tourists coming from France, Britain, Italy and the United States. The nearby town of Kalabaka has become a centre of pilgrimage tourism, having as a reference point the geophysical phenomenon of Meteora and the Byzantine monuments that crown the majestic rock towers.
