Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis hailed on Friday a decision by Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat to start full-fledged negotiations on September 3, with the aim to reach a "mutually accepted solution to the Cyprus problem which will safeguard the fundamental and legitimate rights and interests of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots," and called for adherence to principles.

"We hail the agreement between the two leaders to begin negotiations aiming at achieving the reunification of Cyprus in the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal Federation, with a single personality, one citizenship and one sovereignty," Bakoyannis said in a statement issued by the foreign ministry a few hours after the announcement of the agreement in Nicosia.

"The present situation is unacceptable. It demands a solution. A functional and viable solution, which will repair injustices according to United Nations resolutions and European Union principles.

"The road towards achieving this solution will be a way uphill. What is needed is strict adherence to principles and good will by all, but mainly creative work by the two sides, without impositions coming from outside, artificial timeframes and arbitrage.

"Greece fully supports the new negotiation process which begins. It will be a steadfast helper to President Christofias' efforts and the Cyprus leadership. Unity and consensus are fundamental preconditions, an absolute need, for achieving the common target: the reunification of the island," Bakoyannis concluded.

    PASOK

Main opposition PASOK's foreign policy coordinator Andreas Loverdos on Friday welcomed the results of the meeting between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish-Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, saying that they were a "step of progress toward a solution of the Cyprus issue".

This step had been carried out exclusively by the Cypriots themselves and "without the mistaken or failed attempts of the past," Loverdos added.

Regarding criticism from Turkey over the Muslim minority in Thrace and its rights, Loverdos said that Greece was a "model country" in terms of protecting minority rights in the European Union and could be proud of its record in the handling of minority issues in the last 15 years.

    Coalition party

A Coalition of the Left, Movements and Ecology (Synaspismos) spokesman also hailed the agreement reached in Cyprus, adding that the party supports and looks forward "with confidence to the next initiatives and actions by the Cyprus Presidency and the Cyprus government for the promotion of a bizonal, bicommunal federation solution, with a single personality, one citizenship with political equality of the two communities, in the framework of UN resolutions."
