  • [01] PASOK leader hosts dinner for deputies

Main opposition PASOK leader on Wednesday evening hosted a dinner for his party's deputies participating in the first summer Parliament sesion.

Party spokesman George Papaconstantinou, meanwhile, accused earlier on Wednesday the government of not possessing a special plan for coping with crises and forest protection.

Commenting on the wildfires raging in many parts of Greece, Papaconstantinou referred to a European Parliament report which claims that there is no plan in Greece for coping with crises and the protection of forests. He said that ?we will also hear this year last years stupidities regarding asymmetric threats.?

Papaconstantinou accused the government of lacking a policy for preventing and extinguishing of fires.

On health issues, Papaconstantinou referred to ?the lack of medical and nursing staff,? and called on the government to ?seriously see the deficiencies and seriously finance health.?

PASOK on Wednesday welcomed Panama's new stance on the name dispute between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).

"Any change of stance observed by any country, which had joined the camp of those insisting on not recognising international resolutions on this issue is useful," party spokesman George Papaconstantinou told reporters at his daily briefing.

Speaking to reporters after being received, earlier on Wednesday, by Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis at the foreign ministry, Panamanian Ambassador to Greece Antonio Foti Taqui Ochoa announced that his country's government supports the ongoing UN efforts for a mutually acceptable solution to the FYROM name issue and will apply "for all purposes, the result that arises from the negotiations taking place under the UN".

This is a change of position for Panama, which in 2002 had recognized FYROM with its 'constitutional' name of 'Macedonia'.
