  • [01] Papandreou visits Halkidiki

The country needs a new model of development based on the environment and not on spatial plans that turn forests and beaches into swathes of concrete, main opposition PASOK leader George Papandreou said on Wednesday while visiting the forest owned by Thessaloniki's Aristotelian University at the village Taxiarchis in Halkidiki.

Papandreou was shown around the facilities of the university's forest science department, stressing that this highlighted another side of Greece that engendered hope, a side that respected the environment but also used it for the economic development of the country while giving life to the villages and traditions of the country.

This model is the new model for development that contrasts with the logic of covering everything with concrete, PASOK's leader underlined.

Papandreou was earlier briefed by students and faculty of the school and delivered a brief address in which he congratulated them on the work they were doing. Referring to the destruction of Greece's forests in the fires, he focused particularly on the damage suffered by the prefecture of Ileia in 2007, noting that there had been no 'asymmetric threats' but simply some people that wanted to take over the burnt land for profit.

He also said that the party's decision to hold its 'Symi Symposium' in Halkidiki this year aimed to highlight the region environmentally, since one of the main topics of the symposium would be the environment and climate change.

PASOKs leader further accused the government of having "abandoned forests" by failing to provide enough funds and hire enough people to protect them.

Papandreou next visited the Womens' Agricultural Cooperative at the village Taxiarchis and attended a dinner with central Macedonia's PASOK MPs that were in the area at the time.
