[01] FinMin at EXPO Zaragoza 2008ZARAGOZA (ANA-MPA) -- Economy and Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis toured the Expo Zaragoza 2008 here on Saturday after inaugurating the Greek pavilion, as Greece was the featured country on Saturday. The 2008 Zaragoza Expo's theme is "Water and viable development," with the participation of 104 countries. Alogoskoufis said governments and people worldwide must act together to preserve water sources and secure the most important element of human life, while establishing the basis for a viable development benefiting future generations. Alogoskoufis also referred to efforts to boost Greek products' quality and the country's natural beauty. He characterised Greece as an economic hub of SE Europe, adding the Greek economy has developed in the last years as a result of reforms that have been carried out by the government. "The Greek Pavilion is one of the best in the exhibition, it is amazing in the way that it combines new technologies with tradition and helps the visitor better understand Greece and its history, our past and future," he stressed. The "Efpalinion Orygma" is the main attraction of the Greek pavilion, a recreation of a tunnel constructed on the island of Samos in the 6th century B.C. The original is some 1,036m length and was cut through a mountain to serve as a water channel, bringing water from one side of the island to the other. Referring to the ongoing Siemens furor, Papariga expressed a view that an international judicial investigation of the German multinational began after it vied for defence contracts, whereas its competitors are only selectively leaking damning information against Siemens.
