  • [01] PASOK on OTE, Deutsche Telekom company

Main opposition PASOK party spokesman George Papaconstantinou, commenting on the issue of the Hellenic Telecommunications Organisation (OTE) on Thursday, said that "today, OTE's profits for the first quarter were announced and by a diabolical coincidence, the figure of 140 million euros was announced. In other words, precisely the excess price received by the Hellenic state to deliver the management."

Also referring to the reply given by the Economy Minister George Alogoskoufis, at a press conference earlier, to a question on telephone tapping in Germany that "such things have also happened in Greece," Papaconstantinou said that (it is deduced from the reply) "the government does not consider the issue of phonetapping serious."

PASOK's economy rapporteur Louka Katseli also commented on the tabling in Parliament of OTE's agreement with the Deutsche Telekom company, saying that "the market has already judged this 'marriage' and its propects. The Organisation's share is tumbling. We shall have the opportunity in Parliament to highlight the individual aspects of the agreement which render it very unprofitable."

Katseli also pondered "what exediency lies behind the decrease in the state's participation percentage in OTE to 28 percent, that left the Organisation unprotected from an aggressive buyout. Why didn't it go ahead with open tendering to find a strategic investor and chose this untransparent process."
