  • [01] Cabinet to discuss energy issues on Wednesday

An inner cabinet meeting on Wednesday will focus mainly on energy issues, government spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos said on Tuesday. He also denied rumours of problems between the development and finance ministries, and even within the development ministry itself, in efforts to curb price hikes.

The government is in the process of imposing measures designed to discourage price-gouging and unjustifiably high profits and is trying to iron out some technical issues but there is no conflict within its ranks, he stressed.

While not ruling out a discussion on prices by the inner cabinet - in view of a meeting just a few days earlier between Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and the development ministry's leadership - Roussopoulos said he could confirm what he said on Monday about rumoured problems between Development Minister Christos Folias and his second-in-command George Vlachos.

"The effort being made by both is an effort to curb profiteering and to impose the 41 measures, which cannot, however, bring results from one day to the next. Would that the distortions of decades could be fixed just like that," the spokesman said.
