  • [01] Christmas holidaymakers beginning their journey home

Christmas holidaymakers beginning their journey home on Wednesday will be met by unfavourable weather conditions, since the Meteorological Service predicts showers and scattered storms, while snow will also fall in mountainous regions in central and northern Greece. The Traffic Police have been placed in a state of readiness as of noon to handle the return of holidaymakers who had travelled into the countryside to spend the Christmas holidays. Unfortunately, despite increased protective measures taken by the Traffic Police, 25 people have been killed in traffic accidents so far and dozens have been injured. President Karolos Papoulias spent Christmas in Cologne, Germany, together with his wife and children. Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis went to the city of Grevena with his wife Natasha and their two children.

Main opposition PASOK party leader George Papandreou stayed in Athens during the holidays and so did Communist Party of Greece (KKE) Secretary General Aleka Papariga.

Lastly, Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) leader Alekos Alavanos visited the island of Tinos and Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS) party leader George Karatzaferis chose to visit Thessaloniki.

[02] Zachopoulos's former associate in custody

The former associate of former culture ministry secretary general Christos Zachopoulos will be held in custody following her lengthy testimony before a special investigator at noon on Monday. The 34-year-old woman is being charged with felonious extortion and for participation in suicide with possible intent, charges that she is denying.

According to her lawyer, the woman denies that she was blackmailing the former culture ministry secretary general and that she was having a personal relationship with him.

Earlier on the same day, testimonies had been made before the special investigator by Zachopoulos's wife Persa, his friend and film producer George Mylonas and by one of the former secretary general's secretaries.

This woman witness reportedly spoke to the investigator of a quarrel that she had noted between Zachopoulos and the accused woman about a month ago.
