[01] PM Karamanlis visits naval training centre on PorosThe upgrading of military personnel's training with the aim of raising environmental awareness among younger citizens and making the protection of forestland more effective was announced by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis during a visit Thursday to a Naval Training Centre in Poros."Destruction should end immediately, environmental protection concerns everybody, it concerns the future of our children", stressed the prime minister in a brief speech praising the role of the Armed Forces in the effort to make young citizens environmentally sensitive. The human-centered nature of the defense ministry policy, aimed at rendering military service "quality time" and stop being regarded as lost time, was underlined by Minister Evangelos Meimarakis. The Hellenic Navy's leadership symbolically presented the prime minister with a sextant, a telescope and a copy of his register, as he had served in the navy 30 years ago. The premier was accompanied by Defence Minister Meimarakis and Navy General Staff Chief Vice-Adm. Dimitrios Gousis. The 908 conscript sailors to be sworn-in on Friday are the first sailors trained in firefighting.
