  • [01] PM Karamanlis in Grevena: Economic, development policy yielding tangible results

The new economic and developmental policy was yielding tangible results at both national and local level, which was reflected in the reduction of unemployment, but nevertheless was not enough, as unemployment remained the most serious social problem inherited from the past, prime minister Costas Karamanlis said Friday, speaking at a rally in Grevena.

Speaking in particular on unemployment, Karamanlis said that "we will never say that we are satisfied, as long as there are unemployed people looking for but unable to find work", adding that "the results thus far, however, are proof of the correctness of the policy we are applying, they are an indication to continue on the same path, more strongly...This is our choice, this is our commitment".

Karamanlis outlined his party's platform, focussing on all that has been accomplished and all that has been planned for the Grevena prefecture in all sectors, as well as for the wider area of western Macedonia, for which 60 new public works have been scheduled.

"In the past 3 1/2 years, we have designed, materialised and are materialising in the western Macedonia periphery developmental actions and infrastructure works bugeted at 1.5 billion euro. Of that sum, more than 750 million euro concern the Egnatia motorway. We commenced and are continuing at an intensive pace the completion of the motorway's sections along the Grevena-Panagia axis. By the end of 2008, the city will be linked with the Aegean in one hour, via the Egnatia, and in one hour with the Adriatic Sea. This is the reality. The commitments we undertook are becoming action," he said.

Karamanlis also listed various other projects completed in Grevena prefecture, and noted that the study for the Grevena-Deskati road would be tendered soon.

Turning to his government's agricultural policy, he said that "the fundamental aspect of our strategy for development of the periphery is the reinforcement of the agricultural sector," and spoke in detail of the measures taken by the government in the farming sector, with emphasis on the measures taken in Grevena prefecture.

Karamanlis' next stop will be Kozani.
