[01] Fire Brigade briefing on recent wildfiresThe Fire Brigade expressed its gratitude on Wednesday, during its latest regular briefing at the Operations Centre in the Athens suburb of Halandri, to all agencies and citizens, as well as to foreign forces that participated in the extinguishing of disastrous wildfires that mainly ravaged the Peloponnese in past days.An announcement by the Fire Brigade indicated that during the crucial period from August 23 to August 31, 137 fires broke out in the Peloponnese alone, while on the crucial days of August 23-25, a total of 82. In parallel, the Fire Brigade handled the daily cases as well, meaning about 110 urban fires and 150 cases of offering help. Out of the national aerial fleet, 21 Canadair aircraft were used, 21 Bezedel and Grumman aircraft, two Super Puma helicopters and three BK-117 belonging to the Fire Brigade, as well as 19 helicopters and a Russian Be-200 aircraft, that were hired by the Fire Brigade. The foreign forces were composed of 23 aircraft and 18 helicopters, with a total staff of 319 people. Specifically, France participated with 4 aircraft, Spain 4, Italy 1, Croatia 1, Turkey 1, Portugal 1, Russia 1, Romania with 1 helicopter, Serbia with 7 aircraft, Germany with 5 helicopters, Switzerland with 4 helicopters, the Netherlands with 3 helicopters, Austria with 3 aircraft and 2 helicopters, Norway with 1 helicopter, Sweden with 1 helicopter and Slovenia with 1 helicopter. Land forces were composed of 402 people and 32 vehicles as follows:Cyprus 139 people and 14 vehicles, France 72 people, Israel 60 people, Hungary 19 people and 5 vehicles, Albania with 4 people and 1 vehicle, Serbia with 55 people and 7 vehicles, Bulgaria with 46 people and 5 vehicles and an International Volunteers Group composed of 7 people. Only the Bulgarian force is still in the country, while the remaining missions have left. As regards the current state of fires, the Fire Brigade stressed that all fires have been extinguished, but strong forces remain on standby in the event of rekindling.
