  • [01] KKE leader addresses young couples

Communist Party of Greece (KKE) Secretary General Aleka Papariga addressed a gathering of young couples on Sunday, saying that simple radical protest can be expressed with votes for her party and a critical stance towards all that has taken place in the country in past years and concerns young people.

Papariga referred to the problems mainly experienced by young people and to the overall political climate in light of the September 16 elections and spoke of "the substantive solution to the political problem of the country that not only concerns the governance of the country by the New Democracy party and by PASOK, but by the power of monopolies, of capital."

She went on to say that "we appeal to young people, to the younger ages, the young couples, to those who will vote for the first time or for the second and have an initial experience and we call on them with their vote against ND and PASOK and in favour of KKE to state that we know what you are. You shall pay."

Lastly, Papariga said "we are struggling, and we mean it literally, for the young generation to have full rights in their lives. The right to have a family freely. In studies, in health, in prevention, in the environment during holidays, full rights in all issues."

[02] Coalition party leader on elections

Coalition (Synaspismos) party leader Alekos Alavanos said in an interview with the Sunday newspaper "Angeliaforos tis Kyriakis" that the government wants to take society to the elections, due to take place on September 16, like one plays the game "blind man's buff."

Alavanos said that society is going to the elections without knowing the draft budget, without knowing the report by the Analytis Committee on the social insurance issue and without knowing the Zorbas report on the "huge scandal by ND" concerning the bonds.

The Coalition party leader went on to say that opposition exercised by the party had been intense, but had always been substantive and had contained alternative proposals that is something "that has been recognised by the wider democratic public opinion."

Lastly, referring to criticism directed against the Coalition party by the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), Alavanos stressed that "SYRIZA (the Radical Left Coalition) may be an opponent for KKE, but for us the permanent opponent are the policies of New Democracy and two-party rule."

Alavanos also visited the port of Piraeus on Sunday and outlined his party's policy regarding coastal shipping, while on Monday he will be arriving in the northern city of Serres.

[03] Interparty Committee holds first meeting

The Interparty Committee convened for the first time on Saturday evening, while Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos said afterwards that the first session was held with representatives of the Parliamentary parties and another will follow with the participation of all parties fulfilling the preconditions set by relevant legislation.

"We discussed three issues. First of all, the promotion of parties and candidates during the election period. Secondly, the expenditures of candidates and, thirdly, special election backing for parties," the minister said.

"Today, we reached conclusions on almost all the relevant issues. The ministry proved that it has been ready for a long time. The overwhelming majority of issues have been signed. The ministry is ready for the elections to be held with calmness and legality and without shortcomings or pending issues," he added.

Minister of State Theodoros Roussopoulos said on his part that "the decisions on the promotion of candidates and parties from the radio and television media do not differ from those in 2004. The Interparty Committee agreed on a special arrangement concerning the appearance of political leaders at the Thessaloniki International Fair. The activities of leaders of parties and party alliances are not included in the election period and, consequently, the promotion time is not added on to the election time anticipated."
