  • [01] Alavanos begins tour of Irakleio prefecture

Coalition of the Left (Synaspismos) leader Alekos Alavanos began a tour of Irakleio prefecture in Crete on Monday, where he said he will be a candidate in one of the island's four prefeuctures.

Alavanos was scheduled to meet with various local officials and party cadres, while he will also address supporters during an evening rally in a central square of the city, Crete's largest.

In brief statements to the local press, Alavanos said that whenever elections will be held, they will disengage the country from the "suffocating" two-party system, as he called it. Along those lines, he said his leftist party's goal is not merely the 3-percent threshold for representation in Parliament but a significant increase of its electoral strength.

Finally, he said that comments by government ministers recently over changing the election law is merely "panic-driven talk".
