Reimbursement of whatever financial losses related to the purchase of structured bonds by state-run pension funds -- a call more-or-less mirroring opposition political parties' rhetoric in the recent period -- will apparently dominate trade unions' demands during Tuesday's May Day rallies around the country.

The main May Day rally in Athens will again be organised by the General Confederation of Employees of Greece (GSEE) and the civil servants' union (ADEDY), whereas a separate rally will be held in Athens by the Communist Party-affiliated PAME grouping.

Trade unions in both the public and private sectors declared a strike for the day, with other themes being the stamping out of undocumented labour, better protection of incomes, guaranteed work, protection of union freedoms and workers' rights.

On his part, ruling New Democracy (ND) party Secretary Lefteris Zagoritis stressed, in a message issued on the occasion, that the May Day commemoration is a reminder of the fact that workers' rights are non negotiable.

The Communist Party of Greece's (KKE) central committee called on all workers to participate in the May Day celebrations honoring the struggle and sacrifice of the working classes, while stressing that the ruling ND and main opposition PASOK parties are "accomplices" and that their common goal is to serve big capital.

The Coalition of the Left (Synaspismos) stressed that May Day commemorates workers' struggle for freedom, equality, justice and solidarity in a world without prejudice and exploitation, adding that this year's celebrations will take place in the wake of the structured bonds' "scandal".
