[01] PASOK leader George Papandreou begins tourMain opposition PASOK party leader George Papandreou began a two-day tour of the northern cities of Ptolemaida, Kastoria and Kozani on Saturday. Visiting the electric power plant of Kardia in Ptolemaida, where he held meetings with the plant's administration and with employees, Papandreou accused the government of downgrading the Public Power Corporation (DEH).He added that during its three years of governance the government has ruled DEH without principles, without goals and without plans, it downgraded it in a crucial period and this is a tragic crime. Papandreou said the New Democracy party government received DEH when it was making profits and it has now made it loss-making, adding that "with such a policy it will be unable to handle possible problems of electric power adequacy during the summer." The PASOK leader further said that "new challenges exist for clean energy, the handling of environmental issues and for a Balkan energy policy which is very important for our country." He also proposed the creation of a know-how centre on energy issues at DEH's plants in Kozani, at Balkan level, that can be linked to universities and technical institutes. DEH's administration informed Papandreou that energy produced in the region of Kozani and Ptolemaida covers 60 percent of the country's needs. Lignite reserves can last for another 35-40 years and amount to about 1.8 billion tons. Papandreou is scheduled to address a political event at a hotel in the city of Kastoria at 7 on Saturday evening, while at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday he will be addressing a political event in Kozani, at the Exhibition Centre at Kila and at 3 p.m. he will be meeting with local party members.
