• [01] PM confers with merchant marine minister

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Monday received Merchant Marine Minister Manolis Kefaloyiannis, who briefed the premier on matters falling under the competency of his ministry.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Kefaloyiannis said reforms in the sector were heading for completion, while major investments in the country's port facilities were also progressing.

"We are opening up a new page in ocean-going shipping," Kefaloyiannis said in reference to the massive Greek-owned merchant fleet plying the world's seaways.

The minister further announced that five new draft bills would be tabled by his ministry in the coming period, bills that concern the transfer of the maritime shipping services division in the wider Piraeus region, which hosts Greece's largest commercial, container and passenger ports.

"We are optimistic also about new plans being advanced by the ministry," Kefaloyiannis added.

[02] Study on Euro dimension of nat'l policy in SE Europe

Four SE European countries, sharing distinct relations with the European Union, namely, EU veteran member-state; newcomer Slovenia; candidate-state Croatia, as well as and prospective member FYROM, will be the focus of a study conducted by the Thessaloniki-based SE Europe Research Centre in cooperation with the University of Sheffield, it was announced on Monday.

The study, funded by the UK's Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), will focus on the changes brought about by EU practices in SE European countries at a political level and how they affect domestic policy drafting procedures through "multileveled governance" that presupposes an interdependent relationship between government and other forces both at a national and international level.

The sectors of public policy that will be under study are social economic cohesion, environment, immigration and population movement.
