  • [01] Papandreou welcomes Palestinian agreement

Main opposition Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) leader George Papandreou in his capacity as Socialist International (SI) President, on Sunday welcomed the Fatah and Hamas factions' agreement forged in Mecca last week to form a Palestinian unity government, expressing hope that it will signal the end of violence and create a better future for the Palestinian people.

In a statement, the SI president also appealed to all sides to make constructive efforts for the implementation of the agreement.

The SI, Papandreou added, "has always supported the creation of two states, Israel and Palestine, based on mutual recognition, which will co-exist in peace and security." Condemnation of violence, continuation of the peace process that started in Oslo in 1993 and the implementation of the "Road Map" of the Quartet, constitute the best path for a settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Papandreou noted.

"This positive step must open the way towards ending the economic embargo. It should constitute an occasion for resuming the peace process which will be supported by all members of the Quartet. The efforts deployed by President (Mahmud) Abbas for reconciliation, the end of violence and the beginning of a dialogue with the Israeli government need further support," Papandreou said in his statement, adding that the SI will very soon come into contact with the government of national unity.
