  • [01] Poll shows backing for CCTV cameras

A majority of respondents in a recent opinion poll favoured the use of CCTV cameras along various major Athens thoroughfares, according to results of a poll published on Sunday.

Specifically, 61 percent of respondents backed the idea of keeping the cameras installed prior to the Athens 2004 Olympic Games; 26 percent wanted their removal.

The poll was commissioned and published by the Athens daily Kathimerini.

Ten percent of respondents said retention or withdrawal depended on unnamed factors, and 3 percent had no opinion or declined to reply.

Thirty six percent of respondents said they believed the cameras were used mainly to monitor traffic; 21 percent said they believed the surveillance cameras tracked members of the public. Thirty one percent said they were employed for both purposes, and 2 percent said neither.

The telephone poll was conducted by the VPRC firm on a sample of 606 respondents nationwide.

Meanwhile, in an article in the same newspaper, Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis stated that security systems installed for the Olympics, including the CCTV cameras, were now underperforming.

"The lives of the Greek public are not any cheaper than those of visitors to the Olympics," Bakoyannis underlined.
