  • [01] EPP congratulates ND on local election showing

European Peoples' Party (EPP) President Wilfried Martens on Tuesday congratulated ruling New Democracy party on what he called the party's victory in municipal and prefectural elections held in Greece last Sunday.

An EPP statement issued from Brussels stresses that New Democracy managed to strengthen its standing nationwide, compared to the 2002 local government elections, and that once again its candidates prevailed in the municipalities of Athens and Thessaloniki.

EPP added that New Democracy and Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis scored a major victory, proving that the current government is doing a very good job, while Martens also expressed certainty that the successful trend will continue in any upcoming parliamentary elections in Greece.

[02] Inclement weather disrupts ferry, air links

Ferries have been banned from setting sail from the port of Piraeus since early Tuesday morning due to high winds of up to 10 Beaufort in the Aegean. The only sea routes operating are the Piraeus-Aegina and Rafina-Marmari, both local routes.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard issued a high winds and high seas emergency warning to all ships sailing in the Aegean.

Additionally, several flights from Athens to various islands were cancelled, while the airport in the northwest city of Ioannina was closed due to inclement weather.
