[01] Outright victories in local electionsKey posts in local elections, including the Athens mayorship and supra-prefecture, were won outright in local elections on Sunday, according to early, indicative results released by the interior ministry.Under Greece's electoral system, some local government positions are likely go to a second ballot on Sunday next week. Results so far show candidates backed by the country's two main parties returning to their posts for a second straight term. Winning clear-cut victories appear to be the candidate backed by the ruling New Democracy (ND) party for Athens mayor, Nikitas Kaklamanis; incumbent Athens-Piraeus Supra-Prefect Fofi Yennimata, supported by the main opposition PASOK; incumbent Thessaloniki Prefect Panayiotis Psomiadis, backed by ND; and Panagiotis Fasoulas, backed by the main opposition, for Piraeus mayor. In the borough of Thessaloniki, Vassilis Papayeoryopoulos, who is supported by the ruling party, so far has an easy lead but a second round of voting is expected. [02] PASOK leader: Election carries message for gov'tVoters in nationwide local elections have sent a clear political message to the government, the leader of the main opposition Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) said on Sunday.George Papandreou claimed that the government had failed on all counts, and was hiding behind dubious opinion polls. "Today, just two and a half years after (ruling) New Democracy came to power, we do not merely have a simple opinion poll, but a vote by the Greek people," Papandreou said after a PASOK-backed candidate won the Athens-Piraeus supra-prefecture for the second straight term. "ND's slide will not drag Greece down with it. The sooner we have (national) elections, the better for the country," he added. [03] Rise seen in votes for communist-backed politiciansVotes for candidates backed by the Communist Party of Greece have increased according to early results, party leader Aleka Papariga said after local elections on Sunday.Supporting the same candidates were the Democratic Social Movement, Communist Renewal and Leftist Citizens' Intervention. "A clear-cut rise has been recorded in the prefectures, and also in the municipalities. In some places the increase is greater, in others smaller," Papariga reported. Left Coalition optimistic at election outcome The Coalition of the Left and Progress on Sunday welcomed the outcome of nationwide local elections as a signal for optimism. The party's leader, Alekos Alavanos, thanked voters who opted for candidates backed by the Coalition who were often representatives of alternative, pro-environment, left-wing groups.
