  • [01] PM repeats vow for overhaul in election aftermath

The government will maintain its policy of reform in order to achieve progress for Greece, the prime minister pledged after early results in nationwide local elections on Sunday.

"Our strategy is leading the country out of the crisis inherited from the past. I will not mortgage the country's future for passing gratification. I want to be useful to the country," said Premier Costas Karamanlis after the candidate backed by the ruling party won the key race for Athens mayor.

"The vicious circle of pre-election handouts followed by post-election sacrifices will be broken definitively, at whatever cost to the party," Karamanlis underlined.

Acknowledging that errors had been made, he nevertheless ruled out an early general election. "The government will adhere to its strategy and that is how it will move towards national elections in 2008".

Tangible progress had been made in the economy that was recognised by the European Union and other international organisations. And the government was pursuing regional growth and a higher social dividend, he said.

In implied criticism of the main opposition Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), the prime minister noted that local elections should not be exploited or used as a vehicle for sensationalism.

"The public is increasingly voting along local government lines, and fanaticism has receded. This is a favourable development," he added.
