[01] ADEDY to strike in support of teachers
The civil servants' union, ADEDY, on Friday announced that it will call
another 24-hour strike for Wednesday, Oct. 18, in support of an ongoing
strike by teachers', which looks set to enter its fifth straight week.
The announcement comes after local unions representing junior and high
school teachers across the country also called a three-day strike for
next week -- Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Monday and possibly next
Friday are a school holidays due to the municipal elections, the first
round of which begins this weekend, given that most schools serve as
voting precincts.
The teachers' union is demanding a pay hike of more than 40 percent for
new hirings and low-wage earning educators, more money for the
education sector out of the state budget as well as "keeping the
education sector" in the public domain, i.e. not allowing the
establishment of private, non-profit universities in the country.
ADEDY is one of two major labour groupings in the east Mediterranean
country due to the significant number of civil servants employed in
Greece.
