Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis met Thursday with Development Minister Dimitris Sioufas, who briefed him on various ministry-related issues, while emphasising that Greece's GDP growth rate reached 4.1 percent in the second quarter of 2006, more than double the EU average.

Sioufas also briefed the premier on the operation of markets, regional development programmes, and over his recent visit to neighbouring Albania.

Replying to press questions after the 2 1/2-hour meeting, Sioufas dismissed press comments that profiteers were having a "free-for-all" in the petrol market or vis-a-vis other consumer goods, explaining that although certain extreme instances have appeared, there were nevertheless systematic inspections being carried out in tandem with prefectural authorities, whereas strict fines and penalties were also being imposed.

He also stressed that despite the fact that Brent crude oil prices had reached record highs in recent weeks, the price of unleaded gas in Greece was still 16-17 percent cheaper compared with the rest of the EU.

Responding to a question on the possibility of a power blackout in the coming days due to the anticipated heat wave, Sioufas said all the necessary steps have been taken to avert such an eventuality.

Finally, he said there was 'no issue' of a heating oil subsidy being introduced for the coming winter season, a demand aired mostly by the opposition.
