  • [01] Bakoyannis sends message to quake-struck Indonesia

Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis on Saturday sent a message to her Indonesian counterpart Noer Hasan Wirajuda, expressing sorrow and solidarity with the people of Indonesia following the earthquake in Indonesia's main island Java, the second highly destructive earthquake to hit the region in less than two years.

Hellenic Aid offers 200,000 for Java quake victims

The Greek foreign ministry's international developmental cooperation service Hellenic Aid on Saturday announced that it was ready to offer the initial sum of 200,000 to assist Indonesia's government in dealing with the repercussions of the destructive earthquake as emergency bilateral humanitarian aid.

It also noted that it was closely following developments in the area and was prepared to increase its contribution accordingly.

    No Greeks among the victims

Meanwhile, the Greek foreign ministry said that no Greeks were among the victims of the earthquake that struck Indonesia early on Saturday morning.

"From the information that the foreign ministry has up to this point, after contacting the Greek Embassy in Jakarta, there is no indication that there is a dead or injured Greek among the victims of the destructive earthquake that hit the Indonesian island of Java," a foreign ministry announcement said, while noting that the situation was being monitored.

[02] Sioufas to open 40th Lamia Exhibition

Development Minister Dimitris Sioufas held a meeting with the productive classes of Fthiotida on Saturday morning, while visiting Lamia to open the city's 40th Lamia Exhibition.

The minister stressed the positive steps made by the country's producers that were steadily improving Greece's global position but avoided going into details about the new developmental law being planned by the government.

He also warned producers against expecting everything from the state:

"We need initiatives from everyone, we need self-confidence and to use the comparative advantages of each region," he stressed.

The minister predicted that regional development would blossom through special land planning measures that would soon go into effect with respect to renewable energy sources, tourism and mountainous regions.

Sioufas was later due to open the 1st Developmental Conference organised by Fthiotida prefecture, the local municipalities union and other local bodies, while on Saturday evening he is due to speak at the inauguration of the 40th Lamia Exhibition, which will run for 10 days and has more than 250 participants.
