  • [01] Greece promotes products in Japan

Agricultural Development and Foods Minister Evangelos Basiakos and Japan's Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forests and Fisheries Issui Miura discussed further promoting Greek products in the Japanese market during their meeting on Thursday.

"We talked about the efforts we are making to promote Greek, quality agricultural products, such as olives and olive oil, wine, mastic, canned peaches, tomato paste, honey, feta cheese, cotton and tobacco, which recently have been moving at an improved pace," Basiakos said after the meeting.

On his part, Miura said that the Japanese recognise the benefits of the Mediterranean diet, a factor that will contribute to the increase in exports of Greek agricultural products to Japan.

[02] PASOK cadres complete meetings with EU officials

Meetings held in Brussels by Christos Papoutsis, chief of the main opposition PASOK party's Foreign Policy, Security and Defence sector, and Panagiotis Beglitis, Eurodeputy and secretary of the party's relevant sector, with European Commission vice president Margot Wallstrom and Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, were completed on Thursday.

An announcement by PASOK said that during the meeting with vice president Wallstrom, who is responsible for dialogue on the future of Europe and the briefing of European citizens, ways for the wider participation of society and of citizens in member-states in the discussion on institutional developments and the future of Europe, with the aim of covering the democratic deficit in light of the European Commission's relevant announcements, were examined.

According to the same announcement, the issues of the accession of Bulgaria and Romania, the situation in the western Balkans, the European course of Turkey and the issue of Cyprus were discussed during the meeting with Commissioner Olli Rehn.

The announcement also said that, as regards Bulgaria and Romania, Papoutsis and Beglitis reaffirmed support for the two countries' accession on January 1, 2007, in accordance with the European Union's relevant decisions.
