[02] FM, Turkish counterpart focus on bilateral economic tiesForeign Minister Dora Bakoyannis and Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul focused on bilateral economic relations during the meeting they had on the sidelines of the informal NATO foreign ministers meeting held here on Friday."This was one of many meetings we will have. We will be taking every opportunity to resolve outstanding issues and to discuss Turkeys European course," Bakoyannis said, clarifying that no political issues were raised during today's meeting. Bakoyannis explained that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected in Thessaloniki next week to attend the South East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) summit meeting on the sidelines of which he will meet with Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis. Responding to a question on the likelihood of a visit to Turkey by Karamanlis, Bakoyannis stated that the issue will be settled through the diplomatic route. Both foreign ministers placed particular emphasis on cooperation necessary to deal with the problem of the flooding of the Evros River in northern Greece. The three countries affected by this situation - Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria - should work together to protect people and crops and to avoid a repeat of the disaster, Bakoyannis said. The Greek minister also referred to bilateral business activities and cited the recent example of the stake National Bank of Greece bought in Turkey's Finansbank. She added that another Greek bank is preparing a similar venture. ANA-MPA Copyright © 2004-2005 All rights reserved. Athens News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
