  • [01] Seismic activity continues to rattle Ionian isles

Local seismologists were cautious but reassuring on Wednesday, as seismic activity continued to jolt the Ionian island of Zakynthos in recent days, following a meeting with Environment Minister George Souflias, whom they briefed on the recent series of tremblers off the island, including quakes of 5.7 and 5.9 on the Richter scale.

The stronger of the two quakes, according to the Athens National Observatory's Geodynamic Institute, shook western Greece, including the islands of Zakynthos and Cephallonia, for a second time on Tuesday at around 8:30 p.m., with its epicentre in the sea area some 15 kilometres off southern Zakynthos.

No major damage was reported from the strong quake.

[02] PM, minister confer over constitutional revision

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Wednesday received Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos, with the constitutional revision issue reportedly dominating talks.

Pavlopoulos, a constitutional law expert by training, stressed afterwards that they discussed the procedures to be followed for such a revision as well as a relevant proposal to be submitted by the ruling New Democracy party's Parliamentary group.

Commenting on the sanitation workers' strike that has left tons of garbage on major cities' streets, Pavlopoulos stressed that his proposal for a two-month dialogue to determine which occupations will be classified as "heavy and hazardous" still stands.

The interior minister added that he does not understand why certain parties wanted such decisions to be delayed, pointing out that this stance does not benefit either the municipal employees or Greek society in general.
