  • [01] PM calls on Cabinet to intensify gov't work

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Tuesday will chair a Cabinet meeting coinciding with his New Democracy (ND) party's election victory two years ago to the day in March 2004, with the premier expected to urge his ministers to better advance a wide-ranging reform package, to better deal with citizens' daily problems and to promote upcoming constitution revision.

The Cabinet meeting, expected to include the participation of all ministers and many deputy ministers, also coincides with nearly a half dozen opinion polls over past week giving ruling ND between a 0.2-to 1.1-percentage point edge over main opposition PASOK.

Earlier, the premier received Parliament President Anna Psarouda-Benaki at his office for a meeting focusing on the upcoming legislative agenda and Wednesday's events in Parliament - to coincide with International Women's Day -- honoring women's suffrage and female parliamentarians of Greece over the past half century.

[02] Greek, Turkish FMs to meet on Fri.

Athens on Tuesday announced that Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis will meet her Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul on the sidelines of a Council of EU foreign ministers' meeting on March 10 and March 11 in Salzburg.

According to foreign ministry spokesman George Koumoutsakos, the course of Greek-Turkish relations, Turkey's EU orientation and the Cyprus issue are expected to be on the table of discussions, with the meeting probably set for Friday afternoon.

Asked about the possibility of a visit to Athens by Gul, the spokesman merely noted that it was the Turkish foreign minister's turn to visit Greece based on standard diplomatic protocol.

Finally, asked if the Greek government wants Ankara to also ratify the extension of a customs union protocol with the European Union in tandem with its absolute implementation, Koumoutsakos said that "for Athens, as well as the other (EU) partners, signing means implementation as well."

[03] Airport security staff cancel strike

Airport security personnel on Monday announced that they had called off a 24-hour strike scheduled for the next day.

The decision came shortly after the union had announced a new walkout and following a court ruling declaring an earlier stoppage illegal.

The strike was originally due to begin at 11 p.m. on Monday but a court ordered security personnel to return to work. The union's leadership was due to meet on Tuesday to decide on further action.

The Civil Aviation Authority had sought a court ruling to declare the stoppage illegal.
