Authorities in Lakonia prefecture were on alert Friday after nearly three consecutive days of torrential rainfall throughout Greece caused a massive rise in the water levels of the Evrotas River, which was on the brink of overflowing and flooding, while a woman drowned in Gytheio Thursday night after a dried-up stream overflowed, sweeping her away in her car.

A team of 21 firefighters, with 7 fire engines, have been deployed on the Skala and Elos banks of the river, where the swelling waters were exceptionally high, to intervene if the need arose.

The heavy rainfall has also resulted in the closure of the Sparta-Gytheio road due to rock and mudslides, while the fire department has further been called in to pump water out of flooded basements and cut trees severely damaged by the strong winds that accompanied the storms.

Athens was also facing problems from the continuing rainfall, which caused the flooding of several stretches of roads on the outskirts of the capital, as well as a landslide on the 8th kilometre of the old Athens-Thebes national highway near Mandra.

In Macedonia, the snow that had fallen throughout previous days has been melted by the heavy rain and rise in temperatures, and consequently traffic along most of the region's national and provincial road network was somewhat slow but problem-free.

According to local police, snowchains were required for vehicles only along the Florina-Kastoria provincial roads via Vigla and Vitsi, and on access roads to the ski centres at Imathia, Seli, Tria-Pente Pigadia, and to and from Veria and Naoussa.

The lowest temperature in Macedonia on Friday was recorded in Nevrokopi, Drama prefecture, where it dropped to minus 2C, while the temperature in Kozani was 1C, and 4C in Florina and Thessaloniki.
