  • [01] President Papoulias receives former Coalition party president

President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias on Monday received the former leader of the Coalition of the Left, Movements and Ecology party, Nikos Constantopoulos, who asked him to convene a meeting of political party leaders chaired by Papoulias in order to discuss foreign policy and the overall political climate domestically.

According to Constantopoulos, Greece appeared to be fighting a "rearguard action" in foreign policy instead of organising a dynamic foreign policy to take advantage of opportunities made possible by the European framework and international developments.

On the domestic front, the former party leader pointed to the incessant scandal-mongering and cross-accusations of corruption, saying that "it is clear that the lack of an effective and reliable policy for dealing with problems of corruption and graft is keeping democracy hostage."

As long as this climate continued, politicians lost their autonomy and democracy was daily abused by "a vast and predominant state of kitsch," he added.
