    Internationally-acclaimed Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, his Turkish colleague Zulfu Livaneli and Greek paediatrics and gynaecology professor Apostolos Papageorgiou, distinguished for his work in fertility treatments, were awarded the 2005 Soranos Friendship and Science Awards on Tuesday, during a special ceremony held near Izmir in Turkey.

    The ceremony was attended by Livaneli and Papageorgiou, while Theodorakis excused himself on grounds of ill health and sent a message to the gathering. Both Theodorakis and Livaneli stressed that their cooperation aims to promote relations of friendship between the Greek and Turkish peoples.

    The award is named after the legendary doctor Soranos of the 1st century A.D., who is credited with being the first gynaecologist in ancient Anatolia. It was established in 1991 and is awarded to people who contribute with their action to peace in the world.

    Past recipients of the Soranos award include Turkish businessman Rahmi Koc, Turkish writer Yassar Kemal, former politician Erdal Inonu and former Turkish foreign minister Ismail Cem.

    [02] Greek FinMin pledges to effectively combat tax-evasion

    Economy and Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis on Tuesday said an effective cross-checking of invoices and other data would significantly help the government effort's to combat tax-evasion in the country.

    "I may not be the first economy minister to say he will combat tax-evasion but I am certainly the first to proceed with effective cross-checking of data," the minister stressed.

    Speaking to reporters, Alogoskoufis said he did not intend to publish the names of all those tax-evading in the country, while he expressed his confidence in the operations of inspecting mechanisms of the country. ?We will no show complacency. Inspectors must be chequed too,? he said.

    The Greek minister said the government would be able to offer more to pensioners by the end of the government�s four-year term. ?We have priorities. We must cover our huge deficits and we must do that with the people�s support.? Alogoskoufis said that tax factors should be lowered to 25-30 percent gradually, from 30-40 percent currently, and announced a dialogue over tax reforms in 2006.

    He defended the independence and accuracy of National Statistics Service and rejected criticism that the ministry was adopting a ?creative accounting? policy to improve public finances.
