  • [01] Gov't defends industrial relations bill

Employment Minister Panos Panayiotopoulos again defended a government bill on industrial relations that has brought criticism from both unions and employers.

In an interview to the Vima on Sunday newspaper, the minister rejected criticism by the General Confederation of Employees of Greece that the legislation was the result of a pact between the government and the Federation of Greek Industry (SEB) that benefitted employers.

Instead, the new measures righted decades of injustice, Panayiotopoulos said.

Last week, SEB criticised the bill, saying it still failed to bring Greece on a par with other European Union countries in terms of labour law and industrial relations.

The bill merely corrected an earlier law, which was scarcely implemented, according to SEB.
