[01] Japanese poster exhibit opens in LesvosAn exhibit titled "Discovering Japan through Modern Posters," opened at the Museum Stratis Eleftheriadis-TERIADE on the island of Lesvos on Tuesday evening.Present at the inauguration was Japanese Ambassador to Greece Toshio Mochizuki, special guest of the Museum's Chairman and Mayor of Lesvos Aristidis Hatzikomninos. Hatzikomninos, after welcoming Mochizuki to Lesvos, stressed the importance of exchanges between the two peoples on cultural, tourism and commercial issues. "It is a great honour for me to be receiving you here in the Aegean's capital, Lesvos, the twin city of Japan's Usimato," Hatzikomninos said. He also referred to the long history of Greek and Japanese civilisation, saying that "this makes tonight even more special since two very important and historic peoples are meeting...on the edge of the Aegean." On his part, Mochizuki referred to the natural beauty of Lesvos and said that it was similar to southern Japan. Museum curator Costas Maniatopoulos requested the help of the state and local authorities so that the museum can realise its objectives, modernise its infrastructure and organise many and successful events. "Thanks to the posters you will see at this exhibit you will get a slight, but representative taste of Japanese culture. And if you go to the trouble to read the copy which refers to the artists' thoughts and rationale, you will discover that the concerns and dreams of these people who live so far away from us are very similar with our own concerns and dreams," Maniatopoulos said. The exhibit is being organised in cooperation with the Japan Foundation, a government organisation established in 1972 whose aim is to promote Japanese culture abroad. It is being held within the context of the campaign "2005: EU-Japan Year of People to People Exchanges" and will run through August 18. After Greece, the exhibit will travel to Finland, Slovakia and Norway. Athens News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
