  • [01] Civilian use of Megara-area airbase

The government is reportedly examining the prospect of allowing civilian aviation at a handful of military airbases around the country, following a relevant meeting on Thursday at the Pachi airstrip in extreme western Attica prefecture, west of greater Athens.

The airbase, located near the town of Megara, will reportedly serve civilian aviation needs beginning in late June.

The meeting at the airbase was jointly chaired by the defence and transport ministers.

Works at the airbase scheduled for completion before any civilian uses commence include runway upgrades and maintenance; paving auxiliary roadways at the airstrip; cordoning off a parachute landing site and installing equipment to download meteorological data.

[02] Events for kids at the National Gardens, Kifissia

The Athens municipality has issued an open invitation to children to come down and explore the National Gardens in the city centre this weekend and take part in events sponsored by Vodafone.

On Saturday and Sunday, children that visit the National Garden will see the Gardens as they have been charted by botanists, see the heroes of popular fairy stories "brought to life" in their natural surroundings and also contribute to the outcome of the stories.

Other activities on offer include puppet theatre, shadow-puppet theatre, and arts and crafts workshops using all-natural materials.

Youngsters will also be able to attend road safety lessons run by "Prodromos", the Vodafone road safety mascot, and learn how to take care of their plants.

Parents can keep themselves occupied at seminars on flower-arranging by experts in the field.

The following Sunday, May 29, the municipality of Kifissia has undertaken to lay on the entertainment with a fete for children at Kifissia Wood called "Kifisopaihnidismata 2005" from 11:00 to 17:00 in the afternoon.

This seeks to teach children about Greek customs and traditions in an enjoyable, fun-filled atmosphere with lots of games. The activities on offer will include story-telling and painting, organised play, drama workshops, a pavilion on the environment, flowers and flower-arranging and a karaoke tent set up by Motorola.

There will also be a lottery, with 10 Motorola V220 cellphones as prizes. Entrance is free, while there will also be free parking in the municipality parking lot.
