Cyprus' President-elect Tassos Papadopoulos arrived in Athens on Sunday afternoon for talks with Greece's leadership.

Papadopoulos will be received on Monday by President of the Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos before having what is expected to be lengthy talks with Prime Minister Costas Simitis and Foreign Minister George Papandreou on the protracted Cyprus problem and the intense international efforts currently underway to reach a settlement.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived in Ankara on Sunday and is scheduled to have talks in Athens on Tuesday before visiting Cyprus on Wednesday.

Papadopoulos will also meet main opposition New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis and other opposition party leaders.

[02] Veteran actor Titos Vandis dies

    23/02/2003 22:17:24

Veteran Greek stage and film actor Titos Vandis, who made a name for himself in Hollywood over a quarter of a century in what one film biographer described as ?small but earthy roles? ranging from ?Topkapi? to the ?Exorcist? and ?Never on Sunday?, died on Sunday in Athens. He was 86.

Vandis, born in the northern city of Kavala and raised in Thessaloniki, began his career on stage in Athens and the troupes in the provinces before moving to Hollywood in the mid 1960s. His string of supporting roles invariably revolved around the leitmotif of a good-natured ?neighbour or uncle from the old country?, typecasting he could successfully carryover to television in the 70s with appearances on several US TV shows.

The culture minister expressed his condolences on Sunday over the veteran actors death.

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) also issued a statement praising Vandis for his lifelong support for the party.
