  • [01] Aboriginal culture to be showcased in Athens during 2004 Games

    MELBOURNE (ANA) - The cultural heritage of Australia's aborigines will be showcased in Athens during the 2004 Olympic Games, the government of the state of Victoria announced here recently.

    The exhibition will cover 60,000 years of cultural presence and will be jointly funded by the states of Victoria and New South Wales. Each of the states will grant 356,000 Australian dollars, while private firms will also donate funding.

    The exhibition will be housed in Athens' Benaki Museum.

    [02] FM Papandreou begins tour of western Balkans

    SPOPJE (ANA) -- Foreign Minister George Papandreou begins a three-day tour of western Balkan countries on Monday, in his capacity as president of the EU ministers council.

    One of the ministers goals, according to reports, is to examine cooperation between those countries and the European Union with a view to bolster their EU accession prospects.

    The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) is the first stop on Papandreous tour.

    [03] Iraqi arrested on migrant trafficking charges

    An Iraqi national was arrested on Sunday by Patra Port Authority officers on charges of attempting to smuggle four illegal immigrants to Italy and for possessing forged documents.

    Aziz Snor attempted to smuggle four Kurds onto an Italy-bound ferry boat at the Port of Patra, western Greece. Officers also reportedly found a forged driver's license and a forged insurance card on the suspect.

    [04] ND leader to address Constantine Karamanlis Foundation event

    Main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Costas Karamanlis on Tuesday will speak at an event sponsored by the Constantine Karamanlis Foundation -- named after the Greek statesman and the uncle of the former -- and celebrating the two-year anniversary of the founding of the Karamanlis chair at the Tuft's Fletcher School of Diplomacy.

    In addition, the dean of Fletcher school, Stephen Bosworth, will also address the event, entitled ''Peace and stability in the Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean''.

    Clearing skies and chilly conditions are forecast for Monday with only a chance of sporadic rainfall in the south and snow flurries in the mountainous regions. North to northeasterly winds, strong to gale force strength at times, on the Aegean. Temperatures between -7C to 3C in the north; -2 to 11 in the rest of the mainland and 2C to 15C on the islands.

    Partly cloudy with only a chance of rain in Athens, 4C to 11C. Partly cloudy in Thessaloniki, -2C to 3C.

    Meanwhile, a flash flood warning has also been issued for the northeastern prefecture of Evros, bordering with Turkey and Bulgaria, as heaving rainfall over the past 24 hours significantly raised water levels of local rivers and streams.
